MANCHESTER-Manchester City, the reigning Premier League winners, are arguing that their advertising income has been assessed “unfairly” by the elite league.

Is Manchester City’s claim of unfair treatment valid?

Manchester City claimed it was the victim of “discrimination,” said competitors endorsed the altered regulations in order to “stifle” their performance on the field, and referred to the ruling as “a tyranny of the majority.” The newspaper also notes that Manchester City is suing for damages in addition to challenging the Premier League’s rules, and that they are believed to have the backing of many other divisional teams who share their annoyance. At least three teams Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United were said to feel compassion for City’s plight in June. It is believed that the former are the only team to have offered a declaration of support up to this point. Now, based on information from a data business that also serves its top-flight competitors, City is alleging that the Premier League has treated them “unfairly” in determining their advertising income, according to Matt Hughes of The Guardian. The study reveals that Nielsen Sports, a worldwide data and media valuation business with contracts with numerous elite teams, was tasked by the Premier League with scrutinizing the fair market worth of Manchester City’s partnerships.

Will the Premier League reconsider its ruling?

City brought up the Premier League’s usage of Nielsen Sports at their recent private court hearing over Associated Party Transactions. The article indicates that a decision is anticipated shortly, but it is unclear when it would be made public for those who are waiting for the result. The most recent confrontation between Manchester City and the Premier League occurs as the team at Etihad Stadium is ready to face up against the league in November after being charged with 115 infractions of the financial fair play regulations. In their most recent financial announcements, which were made public in February, Liverpool claimed that the Reds had been the most watched team in world football for the previous five years, citing analytics involving TV audiences around Champions League fixtures in 2022–2023. The company’s data was considered influential. The team has also previously given credit to specific Nielsen numbers regarding TV viewership for Liverpool’s October 2021 5-0 victory over Manchester United. The Reds were also able to claim the title of being the most watched team in European football worldwide, with 415 million cited by the company between August 2023 and May 2024.

Can Manchester City overturn the Premier League’s decision?

According to cityxtra, After a four-year investigation, the Premier League initially punished Manchester City in February 2023 and sent the team to an independent commission for suspected rule violations that occurred between 2009 and 2018. The past four seasons’ Premier League winners, who have also charged City of not cooperating with the inquiry since it began in December 2018, expressed their astonishment at the claims and said that they are backed by a “body of irrefutable evidence.” As per liverpoolecho, Manchester City is allegedly accusing the Premier League of treating them unfairly since Nielsen Sports, whose statistics have been utilized by Liverpool in the past, provided the data needed to determine their advertising income. Liverpool has been closely observing the events of the past several weeks, as City has filed a lawsuit against the Premier League. The laws governing Associated Party Transactions, which were established in place to prevent businesses with ties to club owners from inflating sponsorship deals’ market values, are challenged by the holders of the titles.

Will this legal battle set a precedent for future disputes?

Their Abu Dhabi owning company has been suing for damages, claiming the laws are illegal. A separate court case has been scheduled for November of this year, centered upon claims of financial violations totaling 115 counts. The Public Investment Fund for Saudi Arabia acquired Newcastle United in December 2021, and the Associated Party Transaction Rules were implemented to prevent clubs from inflating business transactions with firms connected to their owners. According to a recent report in The Guardian, despite Nielsen Sports’ standing as the industry’s premier provider of data and analysis to sports organizations on media valuation, fan insights, and digital and social analysis, City is reportedly dissatisfied with the way the company is used to evaluate their commercial revenue. As “the leading source of sports measurement and analytics around the world,” Nielsen bills itself, but City is not thrilled that the American company’s data is being used to determine if there is a case to answer at the Etihad.
